How to Prevent Sinus Infections

How to Prevent Sinus Infections

Sinus infections can be a nuisance as they can cause a headache, sinus pressure and pain, and they can potentially lead cause more complications if left untreated.

Greater Knoxville ENT offers these tips to help prevent sinus infections and reduce the possibility of getting one:

1. Keep nasal passages clear.
This can be done by using a saline solution or a neti pot to help flush out any irritant. Keep in mind to avoid blowing your nose too hard, because this can push any irritants further into your sinuses.

2. Avoid irritants.
It is best to limit your exposure to smoke and strong perfumes, as these irritants can irritate your sinuses and cause infection.

3. Practice good hygiene.
Keep the germs at bay by washing your hands regularly. This will help reduce the spread of germs that cause sinus infections.

4. Stay hydrated.
Maintain good hydration by drinking plenty of water. Staying hydrated is great for your overall health and can help thin out mucus to easily clear your sinuses.

5. Keep surfaces clean.
A clean home is a happy home! Prevent sinus infections by keeping your home clean and mold and dust-free. Helpful tip: Use a damp cloth to wipe down surfaces that collect dust or invest in an air purifier to reduce irritants in the air. This is a great tip especially for pet owners.

6. Invest in a humidifier.
Dry air will create dryness and irritation in your sinuses. A humidifier will add moisture to the air, reducing your risk of sinus infections.

7. Get a good night’s sleep.
Lack of sleep leads to stress which can weaken your immune system. Be sure to get plenty of sleep to avoid the chances of developing sinus infections.

8. Limit alcohol and caffeine.
Alcohol and caffeine can dehydrate you, creating difficulty for your body to fight off a sinus infection. Limiting your intake of alcohol and caffeine or avoiding them altogether can help prevent a sinus infection.
