Thyroid Cancer: When to Seek Treatment

Thyroid cancer is a rare form of cancer. It begins in the cells of thyroid – the butterfly-shaped gland found at the base of your neck.

Your thyroid gland produces hormones that play an important time in regulating heart rate, blood pressure, body temperature, and weight.

What causes thyroid cancer?

The exact cause of it is still unknown.

Like other cancer types, thyroid cancer develops when the cells in the thyroid gland undergo genetic changes. These changes cause these cells to grow and multiply abnormally.

These abnormal cells accumulate and form a tumor. When left unmanaged, these abnormal cells can spread to nearby tissues and spread to other areas of the body.

What are the risk factors?

Although the exact cause of thyroid cancer is still unknown, experts have identified some factors that can increase your risk of developing it.

This includes being a female, exposure to high levels of radiation, and having certain inherited genetic syndromes.

What are the symptoms?

In its early stages, thyroid cancer usually doesn’t show any symptoms. However, as it grows, it can cause pain and swelling in the neck.

Other symptoms may include:

• Hoarseness of voice
• Difficulty swallowing
• Swollen lymph nodes in the neck

When is it time to see a doctor?

You know your body better than anyone else. If you notice any unusualities in your throat area, please don’t hesitate to see a specialist.

Thyroid Cancer: Diagnosis and treatment

To diagnose thyroid cancer, you will go through a thorough physical assessment, blood tests, imaging tests, and biopsy and analysis of a sample of your thyroid tissue.

In many cases, surgery is needed to treat thyroid cancer. It may involve removal of a part or all of your thyroid gland.
